Opioid Training Course

Act 76 of the 2017 regular Louisiana legislative session mandates that every healthcare provider with prescriptive authority in Louisiana who holds a controlled dangerous substance license shall obtain a one-time three credit hour continuing education (CE) on prescribing controlled substances as part of the licensee’s regular CE requirements.

The one-time CE requirement shall include drug diversion training, best practice prescribing of controlled substances, appropriate treatment for addiction, and any other matters regarding the prescribing of controlled substances that are deemed appropriate by the board.

The Legislature expressly prohibits the board from renewing the license of an individual who fails to comply with the one-time CE requirement following the passage of the law. All first time renewal applicants must submit proof of a 3-hour board approved controlled dangerous substance CE as a prerequisite to license renewal. This CE requirement is considered among the licensee’s annual CE requirement and is not an additional requirement.

A licensee may request an exemption from the 3-hour controlled dangerous substance CE requirement if he/she completes and submits the LSBOE’s certification form attesting that he/she has not prescribed, administered, or dispensed a controlled dangerous substance during the entire applicable reporting period. If an attestation form is submitted, the board will verify the attestation through the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy’s Prescription Monitoring Program.

Below please find courses that comply with the one-time controlled dangerous substance CE requirement.
